High Performance Walls: Thermal Bridging and Continuous Insulation

Thermal bridging occurs when heat is lost through a less insulated or more conductive portion of a building’s exterior. On a frigid winter day this means warm air exits where insulation is lacking, like through a metal window frame or the floor slab in an apartment building. O Street Market, a historical landmark in Washington, DC, was recently restored into an award winning mixed-use community. Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA) worked closely with the architectural team from Shalom Baranes Associates to ensure that the project was built in compliance with federal accessibility laws and local building codes, including the Fair Housing Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the DC Building Code.
