Pirelli Historic Retrofit: Part 1

The Pirelli building in New Haven, CT was designed by Marcel Bruer in 1967 in the Brutalist architectural style. Now owned by Becker + Becker, the once vacant building will be retrofitted to become an all-electric hotel and conference space. Steven Winter Associates was engaged early in the planning process to help the project team achieve their goal of net zero. To do this, SWA is providing enclosures services and green building certification services which will feature some of the most rigorous green building programs in the world, including Passive House Institute’s EnerPHit Standard, USGBC’s LEED® Platinum certification and more.

One of the most important factors in successfully earning green building certification is getting the project team involved from the start. In this blog, Dylan and Kate from SWA’s Passive House team share their experiences thus far, and some of the strategies that are being used to achieve the goals of this unique project.
